Findings from an Extensive Dataset of Black Novels

We made several findings concerning Black novels and novelists based on a large dataset that we created.

Here’s at look at the 1,202 novels in our dataset

We organized the novels by gender, with 615 novels by 231 women writers, 580 novels by 141 men writers, and 7 novels by 3 nonbinary writers.

20 of the novelists have 10 or more novels in the dataset.

Four of the novelists have more than twenty novels in the dataset.

We divided the novels in our dataset into 4 time periods.

The majority (718) of the novels in the dataset were published in the 21st century.

We also organized the books by decade.

The majority (319) of the novels in our dataset were published during the 2010s.
